What are the symptoms of glaucoma

The formation, clinical presentation and treatment of various types of glaucoma are very different from each other.

The vast majority of glaucoma types are open-angle type and no symptoms are seen in this group of patients. If the disease is not diagnosed early and progresses, blind spots occur in the visual field due to the damage to the optic nerve. Then, as if looking through a pipe, the surrounding objects become invisible. Therefore, glaucoma is an insidious disease that is noticed by many patients only in the advanced period, sometimes after years of progressing silently and causing significant damage to the optic nerve.

In the rare closed-angle type of glaucoma, the eye pressure rises suddenly. Symptoms include redness, pain, blurred vision, seeing colored rings around lights, nausea and vomiting. This is usually observed in hyperopia patients.

Early diagnosis is important in glaucoma, as there is no return after vision loss occurs. Abnormal eye pressure detected during normal eye examination may be the first sign of the disease. Regular examinations by an ophthalmologist are the best way to diagnose and treat glaucoma early.
