Multifokal Torik IOL
It is a special type of lens that is placed during cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. Multifocal toric IOL has both a toric design that corrects astigmatism (irregular shape of the front surface of the eye) and a design that can clearly focus multiple viewing distances at the same time. It can usually provide clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances. It facilitates patients in their daily activities – such as reading, using a computer, and focusing on distant objects.

To Whom Is It Applied?

The Multifocal toric IOL is ideal for patients who have astigmatism and also presbyopia (age-related difficulty seeing close-up) or cataracts. These lenses correct both the astigmatism and provide clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances. This can reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses. The effectiveness of the next-generation smart lens treatment depends on factors such as the shape and condition of the eye, the patient’s lifestyle, and vision goals. It’s important to determine the most suitable lens type for each patient. This is decided after an examination by an expert eye doctor and specific tests.

Why Prefer Multifocal Toric IOL?

The Multifocal Toric IOL is particularly preferred in certain cases for cataract treatment. These cases usually include the following: • Astigmatism is a vision disorder caused by an irregular shape of the cornea (or sometimes the lens) of the eye. The irregular shape prevents incoming light from focusing properly at the back of the eye, causing vision to blur. Toric IOLs are ideal for patients with astigmatism because they have a special design that corrects astigmatism. • Presbyopia is a condition that develops with age and makes it difficult to see near objects clearly. It usually appears after the age of 40 and affects almost everyone. Multifocal lenses are designed to provide clear vision at many different distances, so they are also ideal for presbyopic patients. • Another significant advantage of smart intraocular lenses is that they typically make patients less dependent on glasses. This is particularly true for patients who have cataracts in both eyes and have lens replacements in both eyes. Therefore, the multifocal toric IOL is often a frequently resorted option for patients with astigmatism who are seeking clear vision at both near and far distances.

How is the Multifocal Toric IOL Used?

The application process is similar to a typical cataract surgery. Under local anesthesia, the doctor makes a micro incision on the front surface of the eye. The natural lens of the eye is fragmented using ultrasound energy and carefully removed. Then, the lens, which is folded, is passed through the incision and placed in the correct position inside the eye. The lens typically sits where the natural lens was and generally does not require additional fixation. The procedure is estimated to take about twenty minutes. Stitches are usually not applied. This is because it is noted that small incisions heal themselves. Finally, determining the right solution for each patient and each situation is a subject that should be discussed with an eye health specialist. The lens choice should consider a range of factors including the patient’s overall health, lifestyle, vision goals, and current eye health status.
