Congenital cataract
What is Congenital Cataract?
Congenital cataract refers to the loss of transparency and clouding of the lens, either unilateral or bilateral, that is present from birth. The cause of congenital cataract can be attributed to infections or medication use during pregnancy, but it can also occur without any specific reason. Having one eye pupil appearing different in color (white) or having strabismus (eye misalignment) can be signs of congenital cataract.
When these symptoms are observed in infants, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention from an ophthalmologist. If it is causing vision impairment, especially if it is unilateral, surgery should be performed as soon as the diagnosis is made. The timing of the surgery is determined by the ophthalmologist after a detailed examination. In this condition, the most significant concern is amblyopia (lazy eye). To overcome amblyopia, surgery should be performed as soon as possible based on the recommendation of the eye doctor.
