Presbyopia (Reading Glasses)

It generally refers to a vision disorder associated with aging. This condition typically begins after the age of 40 and affects the ability to see objects at close distances. It occurs as a result of the eye lens losing its flexibility, which is necessary to focus on nearby objects. Presbyopia is often noticed when a person begins to experience difficulty performing activities that require near vision, such as reading. Other symptoms may include headaches and eye fatigue. This condition can be corrected with reading glasses, contact lenses, or surgical procedures. These treatments help the eye focus properly on nearby objects again.

Presbyopia Treatment Methods

Reading Glasses:
Most individuals with symptoms of this condition prefer simple reading glasses that improve near vision. These are generally used during activities that require close vision, such as reading, sewing, or using a computer.

Bifocal or Multifocal Lenses:
Bifocal or multifocal lenses are eyeglasses that contain more than one focal point within a single lens. Bifocal lenses usually have two focal points, while multifocal lenses may have three or more focal points. These types of lenses allow individuals with presbyopia to see both near and distant objects clearly.

Contact Lenses:
Contact lenses are also an option for this condition. Similar to bifocal or multifocal glasses, some contact lenses are designed with multiple focal points.

Eye Surgery:
For a more permanent solution, certain eye surgeries can correct the symptoms of this condition. Refractive surgical procedures such as LASIK and PRK can improve focusing ability by reshaping the cornea. Another option, known as Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), involves removing the natural lens and replacing it with a multifocal lens.

These are common treatment methods for presbyopia; however, the most suitable option should always be determined through consultation with an eye specialist. Surgical options may vary depending on the patient’s age, general health condition, lifestyle, and severity of the condition.

After Presbyopia Treatment

Reading Glasses or Lenses:
These methods provide fast and effective results. When glasses or lenses are used, near vision improves immediately. However, since the condition may progress over time, the prescription may need to be updated periodically.

Contact Lenses:
It may take slightly longer to adapt to contact lenses, and proper usage and care must be learned. However, once adapted, contact lenses can also provide immediate improvement in near vision.

Eye Surgery:
Surgical procedures such as LASIK, PRK, or refractive lens exchange generally provide rapid results. However, each of these procedures requires a recovery period. Vision typically improves within a few days after surgery, while full recovery may take several weeks. Temporary side effects such as mild discomfort, dryness, sensitivity to light, or blurred vision may occur after surgery.

The goal of these treatments is to improve near vision and reduce symptoms. In all cases, regular follow-up examinations after presbyopia treatment are important, as eye health and vision may change over time. A specialist physician can provide guidance regarding postoperative monitoring and care.
