Cataract

It is the procedure of surgically removing the clouded lens and replacing it with an artificial lens. This procedure is mostly recommended especially in cases where the quality of vision begins to decrease seriously. Laser cataract surgery is a newer technique that makes this process more precise and predictable. In traditional surgical operations, while the surgeon uses hand tools, in this anesthetized procedure, a laser makes precise cuts. This can make the surgeon’s opening process to remove the lens more accurate and less traumatic. Furthermore, the procedure can allow the surgeon to center the lens more accurately and correct some vision disorders such as astigmatism. However, it may not be suitable for every patient. The patient’s condition and needs determine which method is the most appropriate.

Causes of Cataract Disease

  • Aging: The most common type of disorder is age-related. With advancing age, its lens naturally hardens and becomes less transparent. This starts from the 40s and can become more pronounced in the 60s and 70s.

  • Damage or trauma: Injuries can also cause the problem to occur. Such types may not occur immediately; they can develop even a few years after the injury.

  • Other health conditions: Diabetes, hypertension, and some other health conditions can increase the risk of developing the disorder. Additionally, some genetic disorders can also cause it to develop at early ages.

  • Certain medications: Certain medications, especially types of medications that negatively affect eye health, can increase the likelihood of experiencing vision problems when used for a long time. When such a situation occurs, laser cataract surgery can be performed.

  • Ultraviolet light exposure: Prolonged exposure to the sun can also increase the likelihood of experiencing the discomfort or its symptoms. Therefore, wearing sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats can provide important protection.

  • Lifestyle factors: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can contribute to its formation.

However, the exact cause of most types is unclear. They are generally considered a result of aging, but managing specific risk factors and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of development.

Advantages of Laser Cataract Surgery

  • Precision: When laser cataract surgery is used to cut tissue, this procedure is more precise and reproducible than what is done with hand tools. This can help the operation be more predictable and give the surgeon more precise control during the procedure.

  • Ability to Correct Astigmatism: During the operation, the surgeon can make incisions that can correct astigmatism. This can help patients with vision disorders like astigmatism have clearer vision afterwards.

  • Less Energy Use: In the traditional procedure, ultrasound energy is used to break up the lens. This process can sometimes damage other tissues inside. The treatment mostly uses less energy, which can reduce the risk of complications.

  • Better Lens Positioning: The precision of the incisions made with this method allows the artificial lens to be placed and aligned more accurately. This can improve the quality of vision afterwards.

  • Shorter Recovery Time: In general, it results in a faster and less painful recovery time.

However, laser cataract surgery may not be suitable for all patients, and this method has some risks and limitations.
